BOTOX^® is used for those who want to:

• Treat overactive bladder symptoms (strong need to urinate and leakage, wetting, frequency symptoms)
• When other medications (anticholinergic) medications do not work well enough
• To treat leakage of urine in adults with overactive bladder due to neurological condition, who still have leakage and cannot tolerate side effects after trying another medication.

BOTOX^® is proven to significantly reduce the number of weekly urinary leakage episodes – usually 6 weeks after treatment.

In trials, patients saw improvements as soon as 2 weeks after treatment, and lasted up to 10 months.

Common side effects within the first 12 weeks:

• Urinary tract infection (UTI)
• Urinary retention (not being able to empty the bladder completely)
• Hematuria (blood in urine)
• Fatigue
• Insomnia

BOTOX^® is a prescription medication injected into the bladder muscle by your urologist. Dr. Yamada will perform the procedure by first numbing your bladder and then administering the BOTOX^® injection.

Before treatment:

• Discuss the treatment with your doctor and the results you may expect
• Instructions to stop taking antiplatelets (i.e. Aspirin like medications) for atleast 3 days before treatment
• Given antibiotics 3 days before treatment to help prevent UTIs
• Informed that some patients may have to begin using a catheter after treatment
• Information on how to catheterize should the need arise

On treatment day:

• Test to make sure patient does not have a UTI
• Give antibiotics to prevent UTI
• Explain options for anesthesia – no anesthesia, local, regional, or general
• Administration of BOTOX^® 
  • Small injections in bladder wall after anesthesia is administered
  • Can be done in office or at the hospital
• Entire process can take less than an hour

After treatment:

• Stay in office for about 30 minutes to check blood pressure and pulse rate and to ensure bladder is empty
• Antibiotics given for 1-3 days after treatment
• Check whether urine is left in bladder after you urinate
  • Usually 2 weeks after treatment and thereafter as Dr. Yamada considers medically appropriate
